Amid negative headlines, Saxony, Germany, is quietly one of Europe’s innovation hot spots. Since 2009, its microelectronics sector has grown from 45,000 to 76,000 employees, with projections of 100,000 by 2030. With industry leaders like Bosch, Infineon, and soon TSMC, Saxony boasts Europe’s highest density of semiconductor manufacturers and a thriving high-tech ecosystem of 3,650 companies.
Adding to this success, Europe’s largest renewable PV power plant (650 MW) just began operating nearby—built without state subsidies on a former coal mine and with biodiversity in mind.
These achievements result from decades of collaboration between economic and science policy, bold entrepreneurship, curiosity, a thirst for excellence and purpose—a powerful reminder of what’s possible when vision meets persistent action.
